Subject: The Gift- what do you think it means and what does it mean to you?
I want to know what you think the song was about when it was written and also what the song means to you? Do you think of something in your life when you hear the song?

I would like to have a post like this for each song.

This song means alot to me personally. It reminds me of a relationship that I am/kind of not (does that make any sense?) still in. I love this person very much, as a freind and a life long companion. But when I lye in the bed with them every night, it feels so wrong inside. But I know this person is good for me, and treats me very wonderful, but I just can't seem to get to that love feeling,like the way she loves me. the line "im so ashamed of the gift you give me" just makes me think of how I feel so bad for not being able to love her the way she loves me. And when he says "im so ashamed of the lie im living" It makes me think of how I am just leading this person on, because I don't want to hurt them.
This is def. one of my fav. songs.

What I get out of this song is that I'm afraid to fall in love. Im ready to, I really want to and I want to be with somebody. But what happens when I finally build that bridge and begin to cross it? What am I going to feel. Will this person be the one? Will I have built this bridge strong enough or should I have even built it in the first place? "I'm so afraid of the gift you give me." To me means that this person is giving me so much, and im afraid that im going to reject it someway. Ive wanted it for so long, but what if for some reason it doesn't live up to my expectations. I dont want to ruin what I have because of the way I am, because of how selfish I've been for so long. (I've waited here for you, for so very, loonnnnnnngggg! awwwww waited here for you) (sorry, had my zakk wylde moment lol)

Nice post Seetherman 17, I don't think we know how selfish we become until we have to share our worlds with people. I can relate. I also think we subconsciously sabotage ourselves at times too. But we are just human.

I enjoy these replys so much.

I am trying to work two jobs and do not have the mental capacity to post something deep and sensible now- but as soon as it calms down I am going to go way deeper on this stuff than anyone wants to hear. lol

Its so good to hear everyone else's view on these songs and what it means to them. Everyone has a different story. But its good to know we all share emotions on the same levels.:)

The gift being Love and a willingness to commit and not being able to reciprocate (Im not sure how to spell that ) because of damageing past experiences. If this is the case, I too can relate.

i have a very analytical mind. one more interesting view i've come up with is that maybe it's truly about the "gift you give me" meaning his music and lyrics. kinda torn between his gift and love of music and the buisness aspect of it. prolly totally wrong and off base but i thought it was an interesting angle. could just be about someone who's having a hell of a time sobering up and needs a shoulder to bare the hell that it is to become sober. me i just listen to it because i love the music and lyrics.

This song is one of my favorites by Seether. I always thought the gift he was afraid of was love. That line, "I can't face myself when I wake up and look inside a mirror. I'm so ashamed of that thing." was the part I identified with most because I feel like that almost everday.

IMO, it's life. He is ashamed of what he has done with his life. Drugs, take people for granted, etc.

I think it means that he blames him self for something, he thinks he did something wrong.
Hey I may be wrong.
But to me it takes a different meaning of a part of me that I lost along the way always trying to please
others. Trying to find out who I really am, it is hard to find who you really are when you lose your way.When I look in the mirror I do not reconize the person looking back anymore! How do you find what you lose?

To me the gift means the one Jesus gives us (eternal life) and how unworthy we are of it and how we can feel we don't belong because we are on the wrong side of it all (as sinners). Ashamed of our sin afraid of defeat from the evils that can inhabit us. But that's just my interpretation.

The gift isn't about what you think it is. Sure, it sounds chock full of love, but i listened to a seether interview and shaun said he doesn;'t discuss lyrics and sometimes a heartfelt emotional song is really something else, like bad food.
Here's my take on 'the gift' (PARODY ONLY) broken down by lyrics and their meaning:
ALSO...NARC IS MY NEW WORD OF THE DAY....I LIKE SAYING IT AND FOUND THREE NEW USES FOR THE WORD 'NARC', SO JUST DON'T KILL ME. ITS ALL IN GOOD FUN.

The song and it's 'true meaning' (i.e. parody):

Like I never wanted anything
(I need a hug, even if you don't want to give it to me for obvious reasons)
I suppose I'll let this go and find a reason I'll hold on to

thanks for getting it. i thought i was going to get hunted down, or a beat down. at the very least get bible thumped and given a forced baptist, and given my wavering-nay, non-existance-christian beliefs i'm heading down the path of a christmas and easter buddhist (i don't want to miss out of the presents...may add jewish to that so, you know, more presents!)
